Categories (Old Experience)

Managing your categories and using category-specific filters.

Categories help you organize products into groups for easier management, filtering, and reporting. You can assign multiple categories to each product, and categories sync to your connected integrations.

Categories are essential for organizing your inventory, running category-specific reports, and creating better navigation on e-commerce sites.

Assigning Categories to Products

There are three different ways to assign a category to a product in Thrive.

1) From the Categories Page (Bulk Assignment)

  1. Go to Catalog > Categories

  2. Select or create your category

  3. Click the "Apply to items" button on the selected category

  4. Choose which products you want to assign to this category

2) Edit Products Page (One by One)

From the old Edit Product Page, click on the product you want to edit. In the Categories section, add or create your category by typing the name as shown below:

3) Via Bulk Upload Spreadsheet (Bulk Editing with a Spreadsheet)

  1. Go to the Bulk Uploads page (or access from Products, Variants, or Bins pages)

  2. Select the "Edit Products" spreadsheet

  3. Once generated, edit the Category column

Notes:

  • Categories are case-sensitive: "Electronics" and "electronics" will be treated as different categories

  • Categories should be separated by a comma. For example to add both "Apparel" and "Fall" Categories, enter as "Fall, Apparel"

If you have any questions about this, please try testing it out on a few products before diving all in to ensure it performs as expected.

If you are having trouble submitting your Bulk Upload, please read this article for troubleshooting tips.

Creating a Category

To Create a Category, click the Create Category button on the Categories Page and enter your new Category.

Note:

  • Category names must be at least three characters long.

  • Images added directly to a Category will not be synced out to your sales channels. To see exactly what is synced out to sales channels, click here!

Editing or Deleting a Category

To Edit or Delete a Category, simply click on the Category name and enter the updated name or click on the delete button at the bottom of the panel.

Editing a category name will reflect the new name on all products assigned and in reporting.

Deleting a category does not delete the products associated with it—it simply removes the category from your products.

Deleted Categories will also not appear on Inventory Reports for historical record-keeping.

Subcategories

We also offer the option to further segment categories into subcategories. For more information, please read this article:

Filtering by Category

Categories make it easy to filter products, variants, and reports.

Products Page

Simply click on the filters button at the top of the Products page and select the preferred Category (or Categories) you'd like to see on the page:

On Reports:

You'll find the filters button just above the breakdown of the report:

Things to Note:

  • Category names must be at least three characters long.

  • All categories will sync to the connected integrations (if the sync settings are enabled). It is not possible to disable specific categories from syncing out.

For Shopify users:

  • Categories (in Thrive) map to the "Tags" field in Shopify.

    • You can create "automatic collections" in Shopify which populate themselves based on product tags and conditions set directly in their platform. If you set up automatic collections in Shopify, you can indirectly affect Collections from Thrive. Click here to learn more about that process.

    • Collections in Shopify are not directly editable in Thrive. Changes in the conditions of a collection need to be edited in Shopify.
