The new reports: what is different from the classic reports

How the faster lightning-bolt reports differ from the classic ones, and how to get back to the classic report.

Written by Rares Saftoiu

The new reports are faster versions of the classic reports, built for large inventories and long date ranges. There is also one report that only comes in the new version: Product Performance, which adds days of supply, inventory turnover, sell-through and A/B/C grades.

Some accounts now have both versions of a report side by side. This article shows how to tell them apart and how to get back to the classic report. It then lists what is different between the two, so you know which report to run and which number to trust.

For the announcement, see New Reports Experience — What's Changed. For how to use the new Inventory Report itself — its filters, its columns and its download options — see New Inventory Report.

How to tell which report you are on

Look for the small ⚡ lightning-bolt icon next to the report name in the Reports menu. The bolt means you are on the new report. Hover over it and you will see:

(Beta) Same report—now lightning-fast! Perfect for large inventories or extended time ranges.

Every new report except Product Performance, which has no classic version, sits in the same menu group as its classic version and under the same name. So the bolt is what tells the two entries apart in the menu.

If you do not see a bolt anywhere, your account is not in the roll-out yet and you only have the classic reports. Typing a new report's web address will simply send you back to the Reports page with no message.

How to open the classic report

Every new report except Product Performance, which has no classic version, has a classic report you can open. Two ways:

  • In the Reports menu, pick the entry without the bolt.

  • While the beta banner is showing on a new report, click original report inside the banner. That link goes straight to the classic version of the same report.

On the Inventory Report, the banner reads:

Heads up! This beta report only includes data from [your start date] onward. Use the original report for anything before that date.

Two messages you may see on the new Inventory Report when you pick a date it cannot serve:

Reporting date limit reached. The date for this report is outside of the range available on your current plan.

This report is only available from [your start date]

The differences between the old and the new

All new reports

1. The new report may not have all of your historical data yet

The banner names the date the new report's history begins. Figures before that date are missing or incomplete. A report you schedule, or a CSV you pull, for an earlier date can come back incomplete if the data hasn't been filled in yet.

What to do: for any date before the one in the banner, run the classic report. This works for every new report except Product Performance, which has no classic version (see difference 5).

2. Recent data can take up to 24 hours to appear

The new reports are faster, but recent data, such as a stock change, may take up to 24 hours to appear in normal running.

What to do: for today's numbers, use the classic report. This works for every new report except Product Performance, which has no classic version. For a stock count, you can also open the product itself.

Inventory Report

3. Search can return different products

The classic report hands your search to the catalog's own filters, and it can still include a product that was deleted after the moment you are reporting on.

The new report matches your text against a copy stored on each row: the product name, the variant name, the SKU and the barcode. Its screen also splits what you type at each comma and matches every piece.

What to do: if a product you expect is missing from a search, clear the search box and use the filters instead.

Inventory By Location

Differences 1 and 2 above apply. Its banner has an original report link to the classic version, and it has the same 5 columns as the classic report. No other difference is listed for this report.

Inventory Change

4. An extra column, in a different order

The new Inventory Change report has a Vendors column that the classic one does not: seventeen columns against sixteen. The order changes as well — Net Qty Change and Net Value Change sit right after Sold, instead of after the starting and ending figures.

Both versions leave out rows where nothing moved, but they test that differently. The new one looks at the four quantity figures. The classic one looks at the four quantity figures and the four value figures.

What to do: if you feed that file into a spreadsheet or another system, update the column mapping before you switch.

Product Sales

Differences 1 and 2 above apply. Its banner has an original report link to the classic version, and it has the same 23 columns as the classic report. No other difference is listed for this report.

Orders

Differences 1 and 2 above apply. Its banner has an original report link to the classic version, and it has the same 34 columns as the classic report. No other difference is listed for this report.

Category Sales

Differences 1 and 2 above apply, and its banner has an original report link to the classic version. No other difference is listed for this report.

Vendor Sales

Differences 1 and 2 above apply, and its banner has an original report link to the classic version. No other difference is listed for this report.

Product Performance

5. There is no classic version to fall back on

Product Performance is a new report with no classic twin, so its banner has no "original report" link. Before its start date there is nowhere else to get its figures.

What to do: for earlier dates, use the Inventory and Product Sales reports for the stock and sales figures they hold. They do not carry every Product Performance column.

6. Check the start date in its banner

Product Performance uses both your sales and your stock. It can show up in your Reports menu before your sales history has finished loading. Its banner shows the later of the two start dates, and figures before that date are not complete.

What to do: if sales look low, check the date in the banner and compare with the Product Sales report.

What is the same

Report

Columns you see

Inventory

Same 15 columns, same names, same order

Product Sales

Same 23 columns

Orders

Same 34 columns

Inventory By Location

Same 5 columns

Inventory Change

One extra column in the new report: Vendors — and a different order

Product Performance

New report only — 40 columns, including days of supply, inventory turnover, sell-through and A/B/C grades

Both Inventory Reports leave bundles out, and both take a single point in time and read that date and time the same way. In the exports that do include bundles, both versions mark a bundle with (*) and the footnote "(*) This variant is a bundle".

Still not sure which number is right?

Run the same date in both versions of the report, then start a chat with us from the app or the help center. Tell us the report name, the date you used and the two figures you are comparing. Product Performance has no classic version to compare with, so for it, tell us the date and the figure you are unsure about.
