Attributes allow you to create multiple product variants quickly using a simple guided method. Instead of manually creating each variant, you define attributes (like Size, Color, or Flavor) and their options, and Thrive generates all possible combinations automatically.

This article covers when to use attributes and two methods for adding them: one product at a time or in bulk.

When to Use Attributes

Attributes are ideal when you have products with multiple variant options that create many combinations. (e.g. multiple sizes, colors, flavors, and varieties).

When you need attribute names (like "Size" or "Color") to organize variant options in your e-commerce web store. Attributes create a cleaner, more organized shopping experience with dropdown menus or selection options for each attribute.

Method 1: Adding Attributes (One Product at a Time)

  1. Click "Add Attributes" as shown below:

  • NOTE: The "Add Attributes" button will only appear for newly created products.

Clicking "Add Attributes" creates a matrix that you can populate with the attributes you need (size, color, etc).

For example, a T-Shirt might look like this

Once you've added all the options/possibilities, you will have the option to disable any of the varieties manually:

Click "Add Selected Variants" to create those options for the product page. Now, they can be edited further:

Click "Create variant" to automatically add all missing combinations or create a new option based on the existing attribute data.

Click "Edit Attributes" to edit or remove existing attribute data.

Managing Existing Attributes

Add combinations: Add new attribute combinations to existing products using the same methods above. Click "Create variant" to automatically add all missing combinations or create a new option based on the existing attribute data.

Click "Edit Attributes" to edit or remove existing attribute data.

NOTE: When using attributes, variant names and options are uneditable via Bulk Upload because of how the attribute data is stored. You must edit attribute names through the product interface.

Method 2: Creating Products with Attributes (in Bulk)

Use this method to create multiple products with attributes all at once using a bulk upload spreadsheet.

Upload a spreadsheet with attribute information, and Thrive creates a variant for each attribute option combination entered.
