Attributes allow you to create multiple product variants quickly using a simple guided method. Instead of manually creating each variant, you define attributes (like Size, Color, or Flavor) and their options, and Thrive generates all possible combinations automatically.

This article covers when to use attributes and two methods for adding them: one product at a time or in bulk.

When to Use Attributes

Attributes are ideal when you have products with multiple variant options that create many combinations. (e.g. multiple sizes, colors, flavors, and varieties).

When you need attribute names (like "Size" or "Color") to organize variant options in your e-commerce web store. Attributes create a cleaner, more organized shopping experience with dropdown menus or selection options for each attribute.

Method 1: Adding Attributes (One Product at a Time)

Use this method if you only need to create one or a few products with attributes.

Adding your Attributes

  1. Under the Variants & Bundles section, select + Variants

  2. Click "Use Attributes" as shown below:

NOTE: The "Add Attributes" button will only appear for newly created products.

After clicking "Use Attributes," a form appears where you can define your attributes.

(size, color, etc).

Example for a t-shirt:

  • Attribute 1: Size with options Small, Medium, Large

  • Attribute 2: Color with options Black White Grey

  • Attribute 3: Style with option S/S and L/S

Thrive automatically generates all possible combinations

Disabling Specific Attribute Combinations

You can exclude certain attribute combinations if you don't sell that specific variant.

Click the icon in the Ignore column next to any combination you want to exclude.

Editing Attribute Variants

If an attribute combination is enabled, you'll see it now ready to be edited further in other sections of your product:

You can add any missing attribute combinations when editing a product by using the same method above. Simply click into the Ignore Column to display the combination you would like to add.

Managing Existing Attributes

Add combinations: Add new attribute combinations to existing products using the same methods above. Click in the Ignore column to toggle that combination on.

Add or Remove Attributes/Options: You can add additional options, and up to 3 Attributes for more combinations. Remove any options and attributes that may not be needed.

Convert to regular variants: Select Stop Using Attributes to convert your attribute-based variants to regular variants.

NOTE: When using attributes, variant names are uneditable via Bulk Upload because of how the attribute data is stored. You must edit attribute names through the product interface.

Method 2: Creating Products with Attributes (in Bulk)

Use this method to create multiple products with attributes all at once using a bulk upload spreadsheet.

Upload a spreadsheet with attribute information, and Thrive creates a variant for each attribute option combination entered.
